Eastern Cape Farmer wins the 2008 Female Farmer of the Year

Ms Bongiwe Kali from the Eastern Cape is the 2008 Female Farmer of the year Award winner. Ms Kali who entered under the category Top Producer for National Markets was chosen from a list of 33 finalists from across the country who had won the provincial leg of the Awards.
For her effort, she walked away with R200 000 in total prize money including the R50 000 win from the province.
Kali identified the need for day-old chickens in her area and then started Nosandla Poultry, her own hatchery. She has six incubators, each producing 1 500 eggs per cycle. Other than day-old chicks she also sells table eggs, broilers and vegetables. The farm employs 12 workers.
The following are the winners in other categories who each also walked away with R100 000 in cash:
- Top Producer for the Household Use: Jabulani Vegetable Garden in KwaZulu-Natal.
- Top Producer for Informal Markets: Ms Tlamelo Mfaladi from North-West
- Top Producer for Exports Markets: Ms Elize Beukes from the Northern Cape
