Further multiplication is limited to G2 level. As far as the multiplication of G0 seed potatoes is concerned, he adheres to a twelve year crop rotation cycle and in the case of G1 and G2 seed potatoes a ten year cycle.
As far as his table potato production is concerned he annually plants 100 hectares on an eight year rotation cycle. The crop is marketed through the fresh produce markets and the pre-packers. During the past season he had no consignments downgraded on the fresh produce markets, which is testimony to his passion to deliver top quality produce.
Swart has received numerous awards, including the North West Potato Farmer of the Year for 2002, the North West Young Farmer of the Year for 2005 and the National Cattle Farmer of the Year for 2006.
Landbouskrywers besoek Texas
New chairperson for Potatoes South Africa
Ernst Yzel has been re-elected chairperson of Potatoes South Africa for a third consecutive term.
Yzel, who hails from Marquard in the eastern Free State, was instrumental in converting Potatoes South Africa into a world class, dynamic organisation.
Yzel says he will continue developing local and foreign relations and communication. "Other matters high on our agenda are the application for statutory levies for 2011 - 2015 and the implementation of the outcome of the cultivar usage project to the benefit of the consumer. We will also focus on the activities of the potato workgroups on regional level and cooperation with other role players in the potato marketing chain to stimulate consumption. "
